Yesterday, I had the pleasure and privilege to give a not-so-gentle introduction into #Taler, at #cedarcrypt in Pafos, Cyprus, in front of a mixed audience full of fine students of cryptography from the American University of Beirut and experts from various fields.

I talked about the why and how of #Taler, starting with the moral foundation of our work, then introducing the core protocols and the required cryptographic primitives, the challenges of anti-money-laundering, up to our recent work to make #Taler post-quantum-ready. The questions and discussions that followed my presentation were so good! I really am proud of having sparked so much interest in #Taler - in an audience that also included Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum) and Daira-Emma Hopwood (Zcash).

My integration of #GNUTaler with #Tryton/#GNUHealth is done (for quite some time now).

I developed a Tryton module which would allows users to integrate payments with Taler into their webshops, businesses.

This includes the users of GNU Health (which is built on Tryton) and which provides libre alternatives for Hospital Management software, Health Information Systems and Electronic Health Records.

Das trifft es nur halb, ist aber nahe dran. Getränkemarken sind weder digital, noch anonym.

Wenn Banken in Deutschland das unterstützen, kann man damit echte € verticken. (aber eben auch $, und wenn man will auch Getränkemarken)

Das tolle ist, das damit online bezahlen ANONYM möglich wird! Das ist unfassbar gut, ich warte nur darauf bis deutsche Banken anfangen das tatsächlich einzusetzen.

Ich glaube weder Martina Weimert noch die EZB haben verstanden wie der digitale Euro eigentlich aussehen sollte. Dann würde man anonymes Bargeld nämlich nicht mit einer Finanzapp verwechseln die Zahlungen zwischen Bankkonten vermittelt bzw. abstrahiert. Zu mehr taugt Wero ja eigentlich nicht.

Was wir wollen ist auch nicht noch eine EZB App: wir wollen das GNU Taler breit verfügbar ist. Diese Infrastruktur steht schon, ist getestet und Open Source!

Was wie ein schlechter Witz klingt, ist leider keiner. 🤯 #Wero gibts (z.B. bei der @glsbank ) nur mit DOPPELTEM #Appzwang. Das wurde mir nun offiziell bestätigt.

Kein Wunder, dass wir in Europa keine Alternativen zu #PayPal auf die Beine bringen, wenn wir neue Abhängigkeiten schaffen...

Ich bin derbe enttäuscht von meiner Bank und vom ganzen Wero-Konzept – es HÄTTE eine Alternative sein KÖNNEN.

AFAICT, Taler doesn't seem to be designed for gifting people money.

Such as, someone giving money to their friend.
Or, a husband or wife giving money to their spouse.
Or, a parent giving money to their child.
