May 6, 1983: My camera received heavy use this morning, as I traversed another group of scenic ridges with equally picturesque names. The six miles of trail between Neels Gap and Tesnatee Gap featured a long uphill climb similar to yesterday’s and some steep downhills, but most of the trail was nicely graded.

"The measure that advanced Friday would require voters to fill out ballots by bubbling in ovals instead of making their choices on touchscreens. Millions of ballots would need to be preprinted and stored until voters fill them out."

Last couple of days:

- Coast Starlight (Emeryville to Los Angeles)
- Southwest Chief (Los Angeles to Albuquerque)

Then I flew to Atlanta and I have two more cities (Philadelphia and New York City) before leaving the country

An unexpectedly grand building in a small mountain town in Georgia. It is a relic of the Soviet era, built in the 1950s. This was a community space for local agricultural workers as a community and entertainment venue.

Okay this is unfair. You guys have a proper Malaysian restaurant?!

In SF, I have to go to.. San Jose or Pleasanton (don’t tell me about your fave SF Malaysian / Singaporean restaurants..) to Chickenlicious or Curry Leaf Bistro.

Mamak looks great and legit (also Malaysians have vouched for it)

People really do just tell me their favorite restaurants randomly.

While having coffee, I found out about JenChan’s and OK Yaki, so I’m very excited about that

Atlanta food thread:

1. I’m at a place that feels like someone did a focus group of just me and asked ‘what do you want?’ (Coffee and tinned fish)

It’s called Larakin. Good coffee, beautiful outdoor seating in Midtown.

On Sundays and Mondays they have a Japanese popup doing 10-13 course omakase. Cool concept. On Friday nights the chef does hand rolls here

“Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi”

The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi (commonly known as Sameba) is the third-tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the world and one of the largest religious buildings in the world by total area. Sameba is a synthesis of traditional styles dominating the Georgian church architecture at various stages in…

“Zémo Kalaki”

Sultanishani Street is a good example of an anonymous street in Zemo Kalaki, the former royal district of Tbilisi.

It is completely faded, far from the not so distant animated streets and the famous caravanserais of the Silk Road.

“Kaleidoscope House”

In its heyday, mosaic stained glass was a common architectural feature of Tbilisi. Sadly most examples have been lost to time – but there are a few buildings that still boast gorgeous rainbow windows.

One of Tbilisi’s most recognisable landmarks, the “Kaleidoscope House” has large multi-coloured glass windows on all…

“Old wooden house atmosphere”

Paradnaya Kaleidoscope is famous for its colorful stained glass staircase, but the whole 19th century old wooden house is worth a visit, with a great atmosphere.

Bees are such a win-win-win. These hives are in a clearing in Smithgall Woods State Park. They are maintained by Ally Bees Honey (who I highly recommend for local Georgia honey). They pollinate the wildflowers, native plants, and wildlife food plots…all while creating so much extra honey.

“Betlemi Street Stairs”

On the steep slopes between the Narikala fortress and the old town of Tbilisi, the Betlemi Street Stairs offer superb views of the city below, and the stunning Mother of Georgia statue nearby.

These streets meander between the old brick houses clinging to the slope, with a few shaded terraces allowing a well-deserved…

“Overlooking Tbilisi”

Narikala is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi and the Mtkvari (Kura) River.

The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulfur baths and the botanical gardens of Tbilisi. On the lower court there is the recently restored St Nicholas church.

“Gondola lift to Narikala fortress”

Historically, Tbilisi had seven different aerial tramways, but all of them closed after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Since 2012, Tbilisi has a modern, high-capacity gondola lift which operates between Rike Park and the Narikala fortress.

“Chreli-Abano”

With its splendidly tiled mosque-like facade, Chreli-Abano (sometimes called Orbeliani Baths) is without a doubt the most iconic bathhouse in Tbilisi.

Tbilisi’s baths are very different to those in Istanbul, Budapest, or anywhere else.

The location for the city was chosen because of the natural hot springs that course…
