Gnome 50 looks great. I have heard that session restore is not yet part of the release. Do you know, if it is an experimental feature or if it hasn't been included at all. If the latter, do you guess it will come with 50.x or rather 52?
🚨 #GNOME 50 will be released on March 18!
😍 Star or/and boost this post if you're excited! With 5 more days to go we just asked our developers to drop their final GNOME 50 release of their projects.
You can now enable or disable mosaic tiling on a per-workspace basis!
- Toggle mosaic directly from the Quick Settings
- Disable tiling on specific workspaces while keeping it active on others
- The top bar indicator reflects the current workspace's state (on/off)
🍿 I added a workspace switcher popup to visually notify when an automatic workspace change occurs, such as when a window does not fit in the workspace due to overflow or when the last window of a workspace is closed.
Maintaining Mosaic WM and my other open source projects has become a real part-time job. If you enjoy my work on Linux/GNOME stuffs and can chip in, please consider becoming a sponsor! 🧱✨

#238 Navigating Months
Updates on what happens across the GNOME project from week to weekthisweek.gnome.org
An update on GNOME Calendar: Georges livestreamed himself reviewing and merging parts of merge request !598, making the month view easier than ever to navigate with a keyboard!
This merge request introduces a coordinate-aware navigation system in the month view, which computes the coordinates of relevant event widgets and finds the nearest widget relative to the one in focus when using arrow keys. When tabbing, focus moves chronologically, meaning focus continues to move down until there are no event widgets overlaying that specific cell, which then moves focus to the topmost event widget found in the next cells or rows; tabbing backwards goes in the opposite direction.
To illustrate the sheer complexity of navigation in a calendaring app, here is Georges's live reaction:
"Wow, congratulations, this is looking INSANE, Hari... The hell is going on here"— Georges, maintainer of GNOME Calendar - youtu.be/smofXzVwNwQ?t=1h24m6s

After two weeks of writing, revising, and trying to make everything as digestible as possible, I finally published "GNOME Calendar: A New Era of Accessibility Achieved in 90 Days", where I explain in detail the steps we took to turn GNOME Calendar from an app that was literally unusable with a keyboard and screen reader to an app that is (finally) accessible to keyboard and screen reader users as of GNOME 49!

Continuing our volunteer effort to make GNOME Calendar fully accessible with a keyboard (see thread for context), we fixed a major bug that was causing the focus to disappear into the abyss when the user tried to tab into the month view in merge request !576. This means, as of this commit, events should now be completely functional and accessible within the month view. Additionally, the merge request changes the keyboard and focus behavior within the month view: Events can only be cycled using arrow buttons, the focus can't escape the month view with arrow buttons, and entering/exiting the month view can only be done with tab. These improvements will be available on GNOME 49.

Interesting. Resources embedded in shared libraries was originally a Windows thing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource…
ELF binaries are divided into sections just like Windows DLLs, so you can do the same thing here too, if you define a name and format for your resource section, which #GNOME evidently did.
Fun fact: I once used an icon editor for #Windows 3.1 that could package multiple icons into an “icon library”, which is a DLL containing only icon resources and no code.
"Get your pencil ready!"
I could have done so many useful things on a Sunday. But instead I've finished these 100 audio cassette designs using the GNOME color palette.
So in trying to figure out why my pavucontrol is missing an icon, I learned a lot about how icon themes work today!
First, it seems that if your system is using dconf, #GTK 4 will only observe the value you see when running:
dconf read /org/gnome/desktop/interface/icon-theme
You can change it using:
dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/interface/icon-theme "'name-of-theme'"
(That's single quotes inside double quotes!)
This even seems to work while the application is running! 😮
Finally managed to build #GNOME OS on my system with my very own custom kernel and then deploy it to my own system from GNOME OS too. Took a few tricks here and there but all in all a great experience, and definitely less annoying than trying to do the same on any other other distro I've used!

Hmm, is anyone else missing this icon in pavucontrol? (On more "bare-bones" window managers, maybe?)
I'm trying to figure which piece I'd need to fix here. I'm on #NixOS, but that doesn't seem to be the only reason. 😁
This seems to be the "emblem-default" icon gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseau… which Nix' adwaita-icon-theme doesn't seem to have anymore…

Was ist das denn für ein Ratschlag? Bis Ende Oktober 2026 noch bei #windows10 bleiben. Und dann? Alter Verwalter.
