Late February and the view from the southern end of Hendon Promenade/Seawall on the ramp that leads down onto the beach.
I'm sure the seawall was constructed in the 1970's to halt erosion (there is a railway line into the Port of Sunderland just a short distance from the beach).
South from this point there are no coastal defences until Seaham on the Durham Heritage Coast.
The promontory in the distance is Salterfen Rocks, after which is Ryhope Nook.
Just around that corner is a feature known as 'Jane Jiveson's Rock' (it is marked on OS maps) and it serves as a marker for the rate of coastal erosion.
A century ago, this rocky outcrop was actually connected to the cliffs.

Wetter: Tiefdruckserie treibt Februar ins Wetterchaos

Das Wetter in den kommenden Tagen wird von der atlantischen Frontalzone geprägt. So überqueren in raschen Abständen Tiefdruckgebiete Deutschland von Westen nach Ost und führen auf ihrer Vorderseite zunächst vergleichsweise warme Luftmassen nach Norden und auf ihrer Rückseite kältere Luftmassen nach Süden. So schwanken die Temperaturen in ihrem Extrembereich zwischen -5 und bis +14 Grad und pendeln sich verbreitet auf nasskalte Werte ein, wobei der Winter mit Frost den Norden und Osten dominieren kann.

Endlich wieder Wetter - sagen die einen - wann kommt der Winter und wann kommt der Frühling fragen die anderen. Während der Winter über dem Norden und Osten bislang passabel verlief, war über dem Süden und Westen vom Winter nur wenig zu spüren. In den Alpen vermisst man den Schnee und das Wetter dümpelt seit Wochen - ohne Niederschlag - vor sich hin. Das ändert sich jetzt - es kommt mit einer reaktiven Frontalzone wieder Schwung in die Wetterküche und kann zum Wochenende bis auf tiefere Lagen herab für winterliche Wetterbedingungen sorgen. Weitere Tiefdruckausläufer folgen nach und bringen weiterhin unbeständiges und nasskaltes Wetter. Ein nachhaltiger Durchbruch des Winters ist so schnell nicht zu erwarten, doch das könnte sich unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen in der letzten Februar-Dekade noch ändern.

Wetterprognose: Kollaps des Polarwirbels, Spätwinter über Deutschland möglich

Die Großwetterlage stellt sich in den kommenden Tagen gleich mehrfach um. Mit einem Temperatursprung steigen die Temperaturen zunächst kräftig an, bevor am Wochenende ein Temperatursturz den Regen wieder bis auf tiefere Lagen in Schnee übergehen lässt und so für winterliche Wetterverhältnisse sorgen kann. Doch bereits zum Rosenmontag erfolgt der nächste Temperatursprung und lässt den Niederschlag über dem Westen wieder in Regen übergehen, während weiter nach Osten Eisregen, gefrierender Regen, Schneeregen oder Schneefall gefährliche Glätte bringen kann. Der Winter weicht nicht und auch im weiteren Verlauf gibt es für den Winter weitere Möglichkeiten, sich über Deutschland bis auf das Flachland herab durchzusetzen. "Freunde des Frühlingswetters" müssen sich wohl in Geduld üben.
