#PhotoOfTheDay is of the large eroded basin that we camped inside for Desert Rendezvous 2012. The walls along the side were probably 50 feet high I'd guess... The sharp edges hint that this thing likely flooded at times, and was perhaps created by flood waters, but when we were there any rain was a distant prospect.

This desert slot canyon is in the Carrizo Badlands, some 1.5 hours east of San Diego (and then about an hour of hiking with some scrambling).
Ironically, it is also cooler there today than it is in San Diego. 🥴 That the desert is cooler than the coastal areas and inland areas west of the mountains is not uncommon when we have Santa Ana weather, but it's certainly quite extreme at the moment...

Today, I am thankful that it was cool enough to go hiking! My husband and I haven’t been hiking for several months, due to the extreme heat. There is something so satisfying about climbing up, up, and up while huffing and puffing to be rewarded at the top of the mountain with a panoramic view of the desert. One of the main reasons that people live in Phoenix, Arizona is the winter weather. Although it doesn’t quite feel like Fall yet, we’ve had a reprieve from the above-average temps this week thanks to some tropical moisture from Hurricane Polo. I love getting out in nature when the weather cooperates!
