The world is closer than thought to a “point of no return” after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped.
Policymakers and the public remain largely unaware of the risks posed by what would effectively be a point-of-no-return transition.

#FollowTheMoney 🧵 26/n An outstanding review by Will Davies (my Goldsmiths colleague) of Brett Christopher’s “The Price is Wrong”: about our neoliberal political economy (using a Braudelian distinction btw “the market” and “capitalism” - SO useful) and how this explain why investments in fossil fuels continue to vastly outstrip those in renewables. Key point: Capitalism IS rent-seeking.

The political distortion of net zero is an insidious loophole that distracts from the scientific imperative to eliminate the primary cause of our overheating planet – fossil fuels.
Instead of focusing on economic incentives to encourage the rapid phase-out of fossil fuels, climate policies are heavily reliant on feelgood “nature positive” solutions that aim to neutralise carbon emissions by essentially planting trees instead of reducing industrial emissions.

The fossil fuel industry pumped an extra 389m tonnes of carbon pollution into the atmosphere last year by needlessly flaring gas, a World Bank report has found, in an “enormous waste” of fuel that heats the planet by about as much as the country of France.

Reuters: COPENHAGEN/BRUSSELS (Reuters) -Around 2,300 people died of heat-related causes across 12 European cities during the severe heatwave that ended last week, according to a rapid scientific analysis published on Wednesday.
The study targeted the 10 days, ending July 2, during which large parts of Western Europe were hit by extreme heat, with temperatures breaching 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) in Spain and wildfires breaking out in France.
Elisa Morgera, UN special rapporteur on human rights and climate change, urges governments to criminalize fossil fuel disinformation, ban fossil fuel lobbying and advertising, and rapidly phase out oil, gas, and coal by 2030.
In her new report, presented to the UN, she holds wealthy nations legally responsible for the devastating human rights harms caused by decades of fossil fuel dependence.

New research shows Earth’s energy imbalance has more than doubled in the past 20 years, from 0.6 to 1.3 watts per square metre. That means heat is accumulating twice as fast as before. And it’s worse than most climate models predicted.

I have these two sentences stuck in my head these days:
A French minister: we need to prepare ourselves for a future when temperatures are 4°C higher.
A climate scientist: with a rise of 4°C above pre-industrial age, up to 90% of the world's population may die.

You know about that canary in the coal mine, right?
When a canary kept inside a cage dies, the miners need to get out immediately. They are in extreme danger.
For us, the canary is coral reefs. They are dying now, at a rate never seen in human history. We are in extreme danger.
Capitalist commerce and industry are wrecking the planet's biosphere, tampering with the food chain that keeps us and millions of other species alive.
