Braunbären verbringen einen großen Teil des Jahres verborgen im Wald und sind vor allem in der Dämmerung aktiv.
Die finnische Bevölkerung hat ein pragmatisches Verhältnis zu Braunbären entwickelt: sie sind Teil des Ökosystems und werden geschützt, begegnen sich Menschen und Bären aber in der Regel mit gegenseitiger Vorsicht aus dem Weg. Begegnungen sind selten, da die Bären die menschliche Präsenz meiden. Ich nutze ein spezialisiertes Fotos-Versteck um die Tiere in ihrem natürlichen Verhalten beobachten kann.

Braunbären in dieser Region sind Allesfresser und folgen dem Nahrungsangebot der Jahreszeit. Im Sommer und Herbst fressen sie intensiv, um sich Fettreserven für den Winter anzufressen; eine Phase, die „Hyperphagie“ genannt wird. Sie wühlen im Boden nach Wurzeln und Insekten, durchsuchen Beeren und jagen gelegentlich Fische. Das intensive Fressen ist für ihr Überleben essentiell, denn während der Winterruhe müssen sie monatelang ohne Nahrung auskommen.

Ignoring rabbits, squirrels and the neighbor's dogs, etc. Here are the more interesting animals captured by the trail cam at our cabin. Unusual for us, deer have shown up a couple of times and seem to like eating acorns. About the smallest bobcat we've seen was captured too.

In der Grenzregion zwischen Finnland und Russland ist der Braunbär heimisch, obwohl seine Population hier relativ klein bleibt. Die Tiere sind überwiegend Einzelgänger und durchstreifen große Territorien auf der Suche nach Nahrung. Ihre Sinne sind beeindruckend: mit der Nase können sie Futter aus großer Entfernung aufspüren und jeden Duft in der Waldluft registrieren. Dieses ständige Schnuppern und Umschauen ist typisch für die vorsichtige, wachsame Natur dieser Tiere.
