Changes in May temperatures in the #Antarctic by decade... Some of the largest warming is around the Antarctic Peninsula and Bellingshausen Sea during this time of year.

Lots of regional variability in terms of the sea-ice concentration anomalies across the #Antarctic region from last month. Once again, some of the largest negative departures are in the Bellingshausen Sea (along the peninsula).

Depending on the dataset, temperatures ranked somewhere in the top 5 warmest Marches on record for the #Antarctic. Here's a look at a spatial view of those temperature anomalies using ERA5 data...

Last month was full of climate extremes around the world, and it can be hard to summarize it all. Even temperatures for the #Antarctic region were at record high levels

#Antarctic sea ice extent reached its annual minimum in late February (16th lowest on record in the satellite era). This was mostly due to strong winds in the Weddell Sea region pushing the ice equatorward, which is reflected in March's ice concentration field.

Six years ago today. The early morning view from the British Antarctic Survey's Rothera research station on Adelaide Island, #Antarctic Peninsula, shortly before I heard the news that the UK had gone into #lockdown.

The postcard I sent home from the historic Port Lockroy base on the #Antarctic Peninsula on 27th January was delivered yesterday. I posted it when we visited the base, which is maintained by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, during a voyage on the #tallship #BarkEuropa

Day 5 (continued) of my voyage to the #Antarctic Peninsula on the #tallship #BarkEuropa: second landing, at Whalers' Bay, Deception Island, South Shetland Islands. From the landing site we walked up a valley to a depression in the caldera rim from which Nathaniel B Palmer first sighted the mainland of the Antarctic Peninsula in 1820.

Day 6 of my voyage to the #Antarctic Peninsula on the #tallship #BarkEuropa: a close approach to Half Moon Island in McFarlane Strait, South Shetland Islands, but strong winds precluded a landing. Subsequently we approached close to Edinburgh Hill on Livingston Island, a volcanic plug exhibiting spectacular columnar jointing.

During my recent voyage to the #Antarctic Peninsula on #BarkEuropa we experienced rain rather than snow on 5 consecutive days, which I'm fairly sure must be unusual in this region. The temperature anomaly map for January from @CopernicusECMWF provides an explanation. Temperatures across much of the region were 1 to 1.5°C warmer than the 1991-2020 average for the time of year. This comes on top of regional warming of about 2°C in the second half of the 20th century, as recorded at the Faraday (now Vernadsky) research station.

❄️ Throwback to the best #barnfind location ever! Expédition Antarctique 1966 : The Belgian Sno-Cats

Three bright orange Tucker Sno-Cats remain in a Belgian barn after the 1966 Belgo-Dutch expedition to East Antarctica. While others are in museums, these were kept privately and left in this old barn.

The sides of the vehicles bear the Expédition Antarctique 1966 logo, reportedly designed by Tintin artist Hergé in 1957.
