“Umqombothi” (the name in Xhosa of a traditional beer) is a famous track by Yvonne Chaka Chaka, from her “Thank You Mr. D.J.” studio album, released in 1987. It was composed by Sello “Chicco” Twala and Attie van Wyk.

LAURIE ANDERSON
O Superman
1981 U.S. 7” single @ 33rpm

One of the most inventive, unlikely, baffling, and MOVING “hit” singles of all time.

Just two alternating chords using an Eventide Harmonizer and a Roland VP-330 vocoder, the song was broken and championed by the great John Peel on BBC RADIO 1.

Lyrically, it’s mind bending, and many people, including Anderson herself, has said it’s about many things.

I’m not particularly interested in any of that. Just that when I hear it (still to this day), it strikes such an inexplicable emotional nerve in me that I can’t explain.
It’s a remarkable piece of art.

Perhaps Anderson summed it up best.
“Technology cannot save you.”

Ephat Mujuru & the Spirit of the People

amf.didiermary.fr/ephat-mujuru…

In 1972, Ephat Mujuru formed his first group, naming it for one of the most beloved Shona ancestors, Chaminuka. In the midst of the liberation struggle, mbira music became political. Singer and bandleader Thomas Mapfumo began interpreting mbira songs with an electric dance band, creating chimurenga (loosely “struggle”) music, named for the independence [...]

I do own the remastered version with the original Eurythmics score! (It was a limited edition and I picked it up years ago). I'm hoping someone might have already ripped it and put it on the web somewhere, but if that's not the case, I might take a stab at ripping it myself when I have time (it might have to be a stream-rip because of copy protection). If someone knows where to find it online, let me know!

Fun fact: Did you know that #TheEurythmics composed the score to the movie version of "1984" (released in 1984)? It was scrapped and swapped with the music heard in most versions. A while back, I managed to find a DVD of 1984 with The Eurythmics soundtrack dubbed in. I'll look around and see if I can find it on the web.
