in reply to 7222e800 "memdmp" (free use pet) • • •You can easily run a Personal Data Server, but it takes more resources to run an AppView or Relay (so you technically wouldn't have to interact with Bluesky PBC's at all? but you would still want to work with their PDS', as most people still use them.
Also, Bsky's AppView probably does a bulk of the helpful caching of all data, so most would find the best experience using theirs rn. (zepplin.social and www.blackskyweb.xyz might be running their own? or another that I'm forgetting)

That's why Bluesky is centralised. The Bluesky corporation controls how data flows to everyone. Bluesky just want to be the next Twitter, they don't care about doing the right thing, they just want the money.
In theory you could set up your own separate thing but the network effect makes this impractical and it also costs a lot more than setting up your own Fediverse server.
